ChargeUP has formed a strategic partnership with Lanka IOC PLC (LIOC), becoming its exclusive Electric Vehicle (EV) charging partner. Under this agreement, ChargeUP will install EV charging stations across LIOC’s island-wide network of fuel stations and premises, marking a significant step toward advancing sustainable mobility in Sri Lanka.
This partnership signifies LOLC Group’s commitment to the new energy transportation sector by establishing an infrastructure for the EV charging ecosystem. ChargeUP is the EV charging arm of Ishara Traders Motor Company (Pvt) Limited (ITMC) which contributes to drive the electric mobility of the country under the leadership of the Group. ITMC has partnered with Qingdao TELD New Energy Technology Co., Limited, a global leader in EV charging solutions, to introduce advanced and scalable charging technology. Together, these efforts aim to create an integrated ecosystem that enhances user convenience, strengthens customer engagement, and supports long-term growth in Sri Lanka’s evolving mobility landscape.
Lanka IOC PLC (LIOC), a subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, has been a key player in Sri Lanka’s energy sector since 2002. With a strong presence in fuel retail, lubricants and bunkering services, LIOC is now taking a progressive step by integrating EV charging into its network, supporting the shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. The partnership will support the expansion of Sri Lanka’s EV ecosystem by improving access to reliable charging infrastructure. Deploying stations across LIOC outlets, including key transport routes, will enhance accessibility, reduce range anxiety, and make EV ownership more practical.
Through this partnership, LIOC is positioning itself as a trendsetter within the traditional fuel industry. The move reflects a broader shift among energy providers to diversify beyond fossil fuels and embrace cleaner alternatives. Integrating EV charging infrastructure into existing fuel stations allows LIOC to leverage its strategic locations while adapting to the future of transportation.
ChargeUP’s long-term vision is to establish one of Sri Lanka’s most extensive EV charging networks, carefully designed to balance demand and availability. The network will feature a combination of fast and slow chargers to accommodate diverse user needs. Additionally, time-of-use tariffs will be introduced to optimize electricity consumption and reduce strain on the national grid during peak periods.
A notable innovation within this initiative is the introduction of solar-powered microgrid charging solutions that can operate independently of the national grid, providing a reliable and sustainable option during power disruptions or in underserved areas. This supports cleaner mobility while contributing to reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality in Sri Lanka. The initiative marks a significant step forward in the country’s energy and mobility transition, laying the foundation for a cleaner, more resilient transport future.
